Harrisburg School District Gets Grant To Screen Students For STDs

For a second year, the Harrisburg School District has received a $40,000 grant to hire a nurse to screen and treat district students for sexually transmitted diseases.

The school board unanimously voted on Monday to approve a contract for a health educator. That nurse will provide education, screening, treatment and follow-up for chlamydia and gonorrhea in district students. The educator will be in the high school.

Sybil Knight-Burney, superintendent, said that she did not think sexually transmitted diseases were an issue in the district, but rather “the rising numbers within Dauphin County as a whole” are more of a reason to have a nurse available. Continue reading

Harrisburg School District Doesn’t Meet State Test Standards – 10th Consecutive Year

Harrisburg School District missed the state’s adequately-yearly-progress list for the 10th consecutive year as state standardized test results were released Friday.

But the commonwealth won’t step in and take over the district due to low Pennsylvania System of School Assessment test results no matter how long the district misses the mark, said Tim Eller, spokesman for the state Department of Education.
“School districts, when they are not making AYP, they are required to craft and submit a school improvement plan. They submit it to the PDE and if they continue to not make AYP, they have to update their plan,” Eller said. Continue reading
