Another pointless story published by the Patriot News! A recent Patriot News poll shows that a majority of readers would prefer to vote on a Saturday. These readers are the same people that do not understand free speech, the right to bear arms, or general limits of the powers of the federal government to those delegated to it by the Constitution. This is a perfect example of wasted resources from our “trusted” local media source in an effort to distract us from the real news of the day.
Election Day has always been held on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November.
The reasons for that have to do with the fact that back in the 1840s, the largely agrarian American society needed time to travel in their buggies to the local courthouse and back. Since Wednesday was market day and Sunday was the Sabbath, Tuesday ended up becoming the de facto voting day.
But we don’t travel by buggies anymore. And some pundits and voters feel that with our busy schedules, it would be more convenient — and perhaps even increase voter turnout — if the election was held on day when people didn’t have to work or pick up the kids from school.
